Exotic Wings & Exotic Wings Extreme

Bringing you the best opportunities in aviation photography…

Travel to the action, immerse yourself photography, shoot rarities, visit ‘bucket list’ destinations, experience the thrill of the chase, learn from specialists all over the world, enjoy a fantastic social scene… There really is nothing like it.

COAP has decades of professional experience in delivering aviation photography, whether it’s a professional and enthusiast engagement across military air arms and commercial operators, visiting airshows or conducting air-to-air photography sorties.

These operations are strictly for photographers and are dedicated to spending quality time in the best vantage points, often executed with local knowledge and experience in place, and sometimes working towards a specific end result for our hosts.

Such visits may include a Workshop tutorial or have a Masterclass built into them, whereby aircrew or specialist aviation photographers will present to the group in a relaxed, interactive format.

The EW Extreme operations include travel off the beaten track, and are more suited to the dedicated photographer that loves the thrill of the chase. They offer a chance to travel with pro aviation shooters, with in-country experience and local contacts, which otherwise may be too daunting or difficult to achieve. Not for the faint-hearted, you never know what you are going to get on the adventure, but if you do come away with results they will surely be of the highest and rarest quality.

Exotic Wings overview…

•  Small groups of dedicated photographers, spending quality time immersed in aviation photography.
•  Shadow the pros and develop your technique.
•  Workshop/Masterclass often built into the assignment.
•  Produce stunning end results.
•  Solid travel itinerary.

  • What doesn’t change are the principles of great access and the opportunity to test and enhance your photographic skills not to mention the social side of gathering with fellow enthusiasts.

    Ian, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • This week has been one of the best weeks of my life. It was nothing short of amazing. I'm so passionate about my photography and finally feel I have found a place to learn more with COAP. And to top it all one of the pilots wants one of my images!

    Mark, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • We never shot from the same place twice; between the different vantage points, the changing light and weather, and the reversal of flight ops as the wind switched, there was such a variety to the photographic opportunities.

    Steve, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • These have been immensely enjoyable, well run, good value bearing in mind the opportunities they deliver and all with a great social atmosphere, comradeship and not forgetting the essential ingredient of a good dose of banter!

    Tim, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • Long days and an epic week that none of us will ever forget with experiences that will live for us forever. Fantastic COAP trip.

  • Exotic Wings #64

There’s nothing quite like a COAP visit to the States. Epic adventures, classic road trips and stunning photography interspersed with quality socials and great laughs over food and beers. It’s just brilliant. This EW will feature free time in San Diego (with its famous bay, shipyards, museums, craft beer and cultural cuisine), followed by US Navy action, the sunset show at Yuma and the US Marine Corps action at the MCAS Yuma show itself (including those Aggressor F-5s, AV-8B Harriers and F-35s, and USMC Role Demo!). Hot desert action!

    What to expect:

    • * US Navy Action.
    • * Evening sunset at MCAS Yuma airshow.
    • * US Marine Corps action.
    • * Free time in super attractive San Diego (museums, shipyards, bay area, breweries), staying in the famous gaslamp district.

Yuma airshow is one of our favourite events on the US airshow calendar. It offers some great photography of US Marine Corps assets - where else can you see an AV-8B Harrier II lifting off right in front of you, followed by an F-35 Lightning II in close proximity?! What's more, the Role Demo is a great spectacle, but it's also the chance to shoot the resident VMFAT-401 'Snipers' with their Adversary F-5 Tiger IIs in 'bogey' cammo that really hits the mark!

The station holds a laid-back, attractive evening/sunset show too, on the night prior to the main event. We'll be at both!

The US Navy action will become clearer nearer the time, but we will be flying our of and returning back to San Diego to Reno to facilitate this. If it does not happen, we will look to alternative plans, with a special warbird visit in reserve (potentially with air-to-airs).

San Diego itself needs no introduction! One of the coolest places on the coast, this city oozes a unique character and we'll be in the thick of it with all the craft beers and local food, bars and restaurants you can imagine! There's world-class aviation museums, including the famous USS Midway aircraft carrier! This is on top of the docks, shipyards and of course the famous Coronado Beach for shooting the traffic at NAS North Island. What a place!

    This is the outline itinerary...

Sunday 8th March: Meet in the arrivals hall at San Diego International Airport, from 1400hrs. We then collect our transport and check into the gaslamp district for the next three nights. The rest of the day will be spent exploring the city and sampling the regiona's famous bars and restaurants!

Monday 9th March: Today will see us embark on an aircraft carrier in the form of the USS Midway! This spectacle is a real bucket-list item, with an entire museum collection displayed on the deck of an aircraft carrier - amazing! Cue more great social times in the evening.

Tuesday 10th March: The Air & Space Museum is another world-class exhibition of treasured airpower. We will have the full day allocated for this, but flexibility for shipyard tours, street photography in the bay area, and of course more city explorations.

Wednesday 11th March: Fly out of San Diego for US Navy action (TBA).

Thursday 12th March: US Navy action (TBA).

Friday 13th March: Arriving back to San Diego, we then head east on a roadtrip into the California and Arizona deserts, culminating at MCAS Yuma for the sunset and night show, a relaxed affair with some great photography opportunities - if you've not seen Tora! Tora Tora! at sunset or an F-35 night demo, this is awesome!

Saturday 14th March: The MCAS Yuma Airshow - a true Marine Corps airpower spectacle, with highlights being the role demo and especially the home-base adversary training unit with their F-5 Tigers. We then head west back to San Diego.

Sunday 15th March: A free day in San Diego, allowing for evening departures (for UK arrivals on Monday 16th March).
