Exotic Wings & Exotic Wings Extreme

Bringing you the best opportunities in aviation photography…

Travel to the action, immerse yourself photography, shoot rarities, visit ‘bucket list’ destinations, experience the thrill of the chase, learn from specialists all over the world, enjoy a fantastic social scene… There really is nothing like it.

COAP has decades of professional experience in delivering aviation photography, whether it’s a professional and enthusiast engagement across military air arms and commercial operators, visiting airshows or conducting air-to-air photography sorties.

These operations are strictly for photographers and are dedicated to spending quality time in the best vantage points, often executed with local knowledge and experience in place, and sometimes working towards a specific end result for our hosts.

Such visits may include a Workshop tutorial or have a Masterclass built into them, whereby aircrew or specialist aviation photographers will present to the group in a relaxed, interactive format.

The EW Extreme operations include travel off the beaten track, and are more suited to the dedicated photographer that loves the thrill of the chase. They offer a chance to travel with pro aviation shooters, with in-country experience and local contacts, which otherwise may be too daunting or difficult to achieve. Not for the faint-hearted, you never know what you are going to get on the adventure, but if you do come away with results they will surely be of the highest and rarest quality.

Exotic Wings overview…

•  Small groups of dedicated photographers, spending quality time immersed in aviation photography.
•  Shadow the pros and develop your technique.
•  Workshop/Masterclass often built into the assignment.
•  Produce stunning end results.
•  Solid travel itinerary.

  • What doesn’t change are the principles of great access and the opportunity to test and enhance your photographic skills not to mention the social side of gathering with fellow enthusiasts.

    Ian, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • This week has been one of the best weeks of my life. It was nothing short of amazing. I'm so passionate about my photography and finally feel I have found a place to learn more with COAP. And to top it all one of the pilots wants one of my images!

    Mark, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • We never shot from the same place twice; between the different vantage points, the changing light and weather, and the reversal of flight ops as the wind switched, there was such a variety to the photographic opportunities.

    Steve, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • These have been immensely enjoyable, well run, good value bearing in mind the opportunities they deliver and all with a great social atmosphere, comradeship and not forgetting the essential ingredient of a good dose of banter!

    Tim, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • Long days and an epic week that none of us will ever forget with experiences that will live for us forever. Fantastic COAP trip.

    Carl, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • Exotic Wings #58

Medium: Meet in Japan 26th November, depart 2nd December
    Cost: From £1698
This will cover the practice days for the show as well as being flexible around the weather and show ops, with plans for excursions to Iruma and Atsugi, before then returning to Hyakuri for two days at the event. Return flights to Japan available on request.

Short: Meet in Japan 28th November, depart 2nd December

Long: Meet in Japan 26th November, depart 12th December
Bespoke extension on application, please contact us.
The ultimate Japan experience! An extra SIX bases visited! This will cover the practice days for the Hyakuri show as well as being flexible around the weather and show ops, with plans for excursions to Iruma and Atsugi, before then returning to Hyakuri for two days at the show itself. We will then depart the area and the itinerary will include the awesome action and atmosphere of Naha (on the almost tropical island of Okinawa, with a plethora of Japanese and American assets), as well as Nyutabaru and Tsuiki for a massive fast jet fest! The airshow at Naha is a fantastic festival, with QRA scrambles and a night shoot involved! We then return to Hyakuri for three days of operational, non-airshow Phantom flying. Return flights to Japan available on request.

All costings include ATOL protection, Travel Counsellor services, Hotels (twin share), all logistics, travel and admin, hire of transport, hire of private coach for airshow entry, all tolls, taxes, car parking, fuel, meet and greet and services of COAP Photo Manager. Flights to Japan available on request). All costings for the longer trips will also include domestic flights.

Here is the itinerary for the MEDIUM trip. The SHORT trip will be the Friday 29th to the Monday 2nd of this plan (please contact us urgently for a bespoke costing) and the LONG trip is detailed at the end (please contact us urgently for this bespoke extension).

Meet at the Tokyo Narita Terminal 1 Arrivals Hall at 1045hrs (COAP lands around 0945HRS from Amsterdam). From here, we collect our transport and head straight to Mito, where we check in at our hotel for the next five nights (YOU CAN ALSO MEET AT THE HOTEL IF YOUR FLIGHTS ARE A DIFFERENT TIME etc). Once complete, you will have the option to relax in the hotel or to head out to Hyakuri to catch the remaining action of the day before returning to Mito. There's some great bars and food establishments that we will be frequenting each night we are in the city!

A full day at Hyakuri, home of the last Japanese ASDF F-4 Phantoms, with various locations and vantage points to shoot the rehearsals and flight ops.
A second full day at Hyakuri, with more vantage points for photography to shoot the rehearsals and flight ops.

Depending on how the operations and rehearsals have gone, and the weather, this is a flexible day to either return to Hyakuri for the day, or travel out to another military base (such as Iruma or Atsugi).
The Pharewell to the recce RF-4E/J Phantom IIs of the JASDF! This is the last event for the recce jets of 501 Hikotai and they will go out in style! We will be outside the base for the flying and taxiing aircraft on Saturday and then going into the base via private transport on Sunday (which is a HUGE bonus!). Once this excellent event is over, we head back to Haneda Airport, ahead of the flights back home the next day.
Departure from Japan (or optional extension). Flight arrangements available on request.

....OPTIONAL EXTENSION: The Ultimate Japan Experience! After all the action of the above Hyakuri airshow action, time for more...! This will take you to another SIX military bases, including a return to Hyakuri for operational, non-airshow Phantom flying.

We will be visiting Tsuiki, home of the blue-camo Mitsubishi F-2 fighters. These units will be undertaking flight ops as well as airshow rehearsals ahead of their weekend event. Furthermore, the F-15 training base of Nyutabaru will be evaluated, again based on ops and weather patterns. On Wednesday night, we take a domestic flight from Fukuoka to Okinawa, the tropical island in the very south of this enigmatic country.

Get ready take in the exotic sights, sounds, flavours and action on Okinawa, with its heavy presence of US military and all Japanese military services from vantage points used around the island. This will include operations at Naha, with two squadrons of F-15Js, an E-2C Hawkeye squadron, CH-47J units from the Army and Air Defence Forces, and UH-60J units, plus the Japanese Coast Guard and a wing of P-3 Orions. There will also be the rehearsals, arrivals and the airshow itself at Naha - one of our favourite events of the year.

Two days of enjoyable photographic action at the Naha Air Festival, with all JASDF, JMSDF and JGSDF units on show, interspersed with commercial airline traffic. Expect QRA scrambles, a night shoot, and close-up action, all with a unique Okinawan flavour! On Sunday night, we depart Naha to fly back to Tokyo ahead of operational Phantom flying. Once again, we stay in Mito with a great hotel and social meals.

Whilst the airshow at Hyakuri is a spectacle in itself, the operational flying days at Hyakuri bring a totally different pace and style of ops and photography. The jets are configured differently, the flying ops altered, and the crowds gone! Three operational days not to be missed. On Wednesday night, we return to Haneda airport ahead of the departure in the morning.

Departure from Japan. Flight arrangements available on request.
