Exotic Wings & Exotic Wings Extreme

Bringing you the best opportunities in aviation photography…

Travel to the action, immerse yourself photography, shoot rarities, visit ‘bucket list’ destinations, experience the thrill of the chase, learn from specialists all over the world, enjoy a fantastic social scene… There really is nothing like it.

COAP has decades of professional experience in delivering aviation photography, whether it’s a professional and enthusiast engagement across military air arms and commercial operators, visiting airshows or conducting air-to-air photography sorties.

These operations are strictly for photographers and are dedicated to spending quality time in the best vantage points, often executed with local knowledge and experience in place, and sometimes working towards a specific end result for our hosts.

Such visits may include a Workshop tutorial or have a Masterclass built into them, whereby aircrew or specialist aviation photographers will present to the group in a relaxed, interactive format.

The EW Extreme operations include travel off the beaten track, and are more suited to the dedicated photographer that loves the thrill of the chase. They offer a chance to travel with pro aviation shooters, with in-country experience and local contacts, which otherwise may be too daunting or difficult to achieve. Not for the faint-hearted, you never know what you are going to get on the adventure, but if you do come away with results they will surely be of the highest and rarest quality.

Exotic Wings overview…

•  Small groups of dedicated photographers, spending quality time immersed in aviation photography.
•  Shadow the pros and develop your technique.
•  Workshop/Masterclass often built into the assignment.
•  Produce stunning end results.
•  Solid travel itinerary.

  • What doesn’t change are the principles of great access and the opportunity to test and enhance your photographic skills not to mention the social side of gathering with fellow enthusiasts.

    Ian, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • This week has been one of the best weeks of my life. It was nothing short of amazing. I'm so passionate about my photography and finally feel I have found a place to learn more with COAP. And to top it all one of the pilots wants one of my images!

    Mark, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • We never shot from the same place twice; between the different vantage points, the changing light and weather, and the reversal of flight ops as the wind switched, there was such a variety to the photographic opportunities.

    Steve, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • These have been immensely enjoyable, well run, good value bearing in mind the opportunities they deliver and all with a great social atmosphere, comradeship and not forgetting the essential ingredient of a good dose of banter!

    Tim, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • Long days and an epic week that none of us will ever forget with experiences that will live for us forever. Fantastic COAP trip.

    Carl, Exotic Wings traveller.

  • Exotic Wings #53

MAKS needs no introduction - this bi-annual event at the heart of Russian industry shows off the latest and greatest kit that the armed forces have, as well as attractive display items from the home nation and foreign participants.

This EW is a short, sharp hit to MAKS airshow & exhibition, complete with a VIP photography vantage point on the right side of the light. What’s more, we could not go to Moscow and not visit the treasures at Monino museum - home to some of the rarest machines in the world - and soon to close. This year might be the last chance.
Your travel with COAP will ensure you are part of a small, flexible and photography-focussed group, offering the highest degree of flexibility to ensure a maximum return from as many vantage points as possible (and not forgetting a great social scene!).
We look forward to the adventure!

Between 06:00 and 06:40 please check-in with British Airways in Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow Airport. Then meet Rich Cooper of COAP and fellow photographers who will be gathering by Column G, located in the Departures Hall immediately before the self-service check-in podiums (not the usual line of check-in and fast bag-drop desks). Latest check-in time advised by the airline is two hours prior to departure, i.e. 06:40 (please do not go through security without letting us know you have arrived).

Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5, Flight: BA233, Departs 08:40
    Moscow Domodedovo, Arrives 14:30

After meeting the Land Only photographers in the Arrivals Hall, we meet our local driver and transfer to Ibis Moscow Centre Bakhrushina Hotel where we stay for 5-nights on a half-board basis (includes breakfast and evening meal). Free wi-fi throughout the hotel and rooms. Located 2 minutes from Paveletskaya metro station and the AeroExpress to Domodedovo Airport and 5 minutes by metro to Red Square and the Kremlin. There will be an option to head out into Moscow to see Red Square at night.

Today we will undertake an excursion out to Monino to visit the Central Air Force Museum, representing what could be one of the final times to visit the incredible collection of rare Russian gems on display. This legendary museum - one of the best in the world - has been scheduled for closure for the last few years but has had a stay of execution. 2019, however, appears to be the last before the collection is dismantled. Some smaller aircraft will be moved to Patriots Park (on the ARMY site) but the larger, amazing flying machines, are under threat of the scrap man’s axe. This place is a bucket list item!

Today we head inside the show itself to take in the atmosphere and shoot the static displays. We leave at 07:30 on our our VIP Coach, which ensures we can drive onto the airfield and park not far from the static display, instead of parking miles away in Bykovo and using the public shuttle coach service. Expect a very busy, packed day, concentrating on the ground shots (the flying is against the light), before we hit the flying display for the next two days.
At 08:30hrs we depart the hotel and transfer to an embarkation point close to Zhukovsky on the River Moscow. Here we board our specially chartered boat - exclusive to COAP - and cruise along the river to the airfield. We drop anchor near the ATC tower (show centre during the flying display, on the right side of the light). The boat has a cafe, bar, toilets and a rooftop deck. Lunch is taken on board and is included in the cost. The aircraft are above and around you on the right side of the sun, perfection.

A second day aboard the chartered boat to ensure all weather and flying display variations are covered. (Please note that we are joined by other photographers from a partner organisation for this day). We also have the option to head to the river bank, a little further back from the river. This option can be used in case of adverse weather or for photographic advantage/variation. It will be decided the day before and, if we decide to head to the river bank then we will stick together as a group and it will be subject to an additional transport cost payable on the day.

Having checked-out we depart the hotel by 09:00 for a tour of the Kremlin grounds including the famous Armoury (admission is included in the tour price). Then to Domodedovo Airport where we check in with British Airways no later than 14:00 for our flight back to London.
Moscow Domodedovo Airport, Flight: 232, Departs 16:05
London Heathrow, Terminal 5, Arrives 18:00
